Alan Turing IMAGINE Quote Print for Pride
I fell in love with this quote as soon as I heard it. And even more so, because Alan Turing said it.
Alan Turing played a vital role in WW2 by cracking intercepted coded messages that enabled allies to defeat the Nazis. It is estimated that his work shortened the war in Europe by more than two years and saved over 14 millions lives. However, because he was also gay, a criminal offence in the UK at the time, he was arrested and charged. He accepted chemical castration as an alternative to prison.
In 2009 Gordon Brown made an official apology on behalf of the British Government and the Queen granted a posthumous pardon in 2013. He is now on the back of the £50 note (ironically, a note that is not accepted in many shops).
At Pride we think about the appalling treatment of all LGBTQ+ people around the world, not just white gay men, but people of colour, trans, lesbians… the whole spectrum. Many of whom are still being treated abhorrently today. Pride is a still a protest as much as a celebration.
