Marc Godfrey-Murphy, York based illustrator, former Cbeebies animator and founder of the MarcoLooks Print Swap, has launched online character drawing classes, thanks to the platform, Patreon.
During Lockdown, Marc went live every Thursday on Instagram with a Drawalong, showing audiences and their children, how to draw different characters from beloved animated films and cartoons. Nearly two years on, Marc is recreating some the magic by hosting his drawalong on Patreon.
Patreon is a subscription based platform for creatives to get closer to their audience through a tier based reward system. Marc is using two tiers, the first for only £2 is a sneak peek podcast behind the scenes of what Marc is working on with his illustration business, MarcoLooks, as well as free monthly downloads. The second tier is the Drawalong. Each month, Marc chooses a well known animated movie, and with the help of a download worksheet and colouring in sheet, he shows you how to create a brand new character that would fit into that world.
Marc says, "in a progression from the first series of Drawalongs, where I was showing you how to draw famous characters, this time we’re creating our own characters, using some very simple techniques that I picked up from my time working as a professional animator on shows like Numberblocks."
"Customers frequently ask me if I do workshops. It wasn’t always easy to coordinate dates, venue and availability to make them happen. Now, being online with Patreon, I can deliver monthly character drawing classes in the comfort of my patron’s own homes. Each month, I share an exclusive Drawalong video that can be watched at any time that’s good for them, there’s no need to be in a zoom or a live at a set time."
If inventing characters isn’t for you, you can follow along and draw Marc’s character, or simply colour in the character whilst Marc draws. All content will be family friendly, so you can sign up for yourself, or for your children to watch and get creative. In the Drawalong tier, you also get everything in tier1, all for just £4 a month!
